Japan–Saudi Arabia 70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations: Special Performances of Kabuki, Japanese Drums, and Tsugaru Shamisen Featuring Hayato Nakamura

 The Embassy of Japan in Saudi Arabia invited Mr. Hayato Nakamura, Mr. Taisei Otoma, Mr. Hikaru Ishii, Ms. Mitsuyoshi Sasaki II, and their team to hold the “Special Performances of Kabuki, Japanese Drums, and Tsugaru Shamisen in Saudi Arabia” as part of the commemorative events for the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Saudi Arabia. The performances were held from October 31 to November 6, 2025, in Riyadh (at the Japan Festival 2025 in Riyadh and a special performance in Diriyah) and in Jeddah (a special performance at teamLab).

Through these performances, audiences in Saudi Arabia experienced the essence of Japanese traditional performing arts firsthand, creating a remarkable week in which diverse cultures resonated with one another. The audience responded with enthusiasm and empathy that transcended generations and nationalities, giving a strong sense that cultural exchange between Japan and Saudi Arabia has entered a new stage.

This program clearly demonstrated the cultural curiosity and spirit of mutual respect shared by both countries, reaffirming the powerful connections that can be forged internationally through the arts.

Riyadh Japan Festival 2025 Performances (October 31 – November 1 Co-hosted by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City)

 At the Japan Festival 2025 in Riyadh held on October 31 and November 1, Kabuki actor Hayato Nakamura presented a live demonstration of kumadori makeup and performed the lion dance from “Shakkyo.” In addition, Taisei Otoma and Hikaru Ishii gave dynamic wadaiko (Japanese drum) performances, while Mitsuyoshi Sasaki II performed Tsugaru shamisen. The audience enjoyed the power and beauty of traditional Japanese performing arts.

On November 1, a kumadori makeup workshop was also held, giving many participants the chance to experience the world of Kabuki firsthand. Over the two days, more than 3,000 visitors witnessed the first-ever Kabuki actor performance in Saudi Arabia.

Diriyah Special Performance (on November 3 Co-hosted by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority)

On November 3, a closed VIP special performance was held at Diriyah’s Bujairi Terrace, co-hosted with the Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA). Kabuki actor Hayato Nakamura presented a live demonstration of kumadori makeup and performed the lion dance from “Shakkyo.”
 
The event welcomed Mr. Waleed bin Abdulkarim Al-Khuraiji, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, as the guest of honor. Before a select audience of distinguished guests, a performance was presented that encapsulated the beauty and power of traditional Japanese performing arts.
 
In addition to wadaiko (Japanese drums) performed by Taisei Otoma and Hikaru Ishii, and Tsugaru shamisen performed by Mitsuyoshi Sasaki II, the program featured a special collaboration with Samri, a traditional Saudi  dance. This unique fusion of Japanese and Saudi performing arts created a memorable presentation, eliciting fresh surprise and deep resonance from the audience.
