Guideline for Application for Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT Scholarship)

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to distinguished international students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

1. Applicant must have Saudi nationality. (Those of other nationality should contact Japanese Embassy in their respective countries.)
For Yemeni applicants: please follow the guideline of the Embassy in Yemen (http://www.ye.emb-japan.go.jp/itprtop_en/index.html: TBA).
For Syrian applicants: please follow the guideline of the Embassy in Syria (http://www.sy.emb-japan.go.jp/itprtop_en/index.html: TBA).

2. The Embassy of Japan will give written examinations and interviews by either English or Japanese language at the Embassy of Japan in Riyadh. Please also see Selection Schedule and Qualification Exam in previous years. FAQ is also available on the bottom of the page.

3. Those who meet the qualifications and wish to apply for the scholarship must read the guideline carefully and submit all the required documents to the Embassy of Japan in Riyadh by 14th June 2018. The submitted documents will NOT be returned to the applicant.

Note: online application is not available: we cannot accept applications electronically.
Late application will not be considered. As snail mails can be delayed especially in Ramadan, please be sure to mail it well before the deadline.

It is also possible to deliver the application documents by hand: please pass the documents to our security team at the Embassy's gate during 8AM - 5PM Sunday - Thursday. Write on the envelope [Attention to: Culture Section].

1. Research Students

  • Applicant must be born on or after 2nd April 1984.
  • Enrolled as Non-Regular Student (research Student, part-time non-degree student, or auditor, etc.):
    the scholarship will be provided either for 24 months (from April 2019 to March 2021) or 18 months (from October 2019 to March 2021).
  • Enrolled as Regular Student (master's, doctor's or professional graduate course for a degree):
    the scholarship period shall be the necessary period for the completion of the regular program of the respective courses (standard course period).
  • Applicant must have completed or will complete a 16-year school by the end of March 2019.

    Required documents for Research Students (These documents must be written in Japanese or English)

    (1) Application Form with a photo (4.5 by 3.5 cm): 1 original & 2 copies

    (2) Placement Preference Form: 1 original

    (3) Field of Study and Research Program Plan: 1 original & 2 copies

    (4) Academic transcript of each academic year of the last university attended: 1 original & 2 copies
    As we will not return the original, we highly recommend to submit an official copy authenticated/stamped by the Ministry of Education, as the original, instead.

    (5) Graduation certificate or degree certificate of the last university attended (or an attested document certifying that the applicant will graduate from the school where applicable): 1 original & 2 copies
    Same as the transcript, the authenticated/stamped copy should be submitted as the original.

    (6) Recommendation from the president/dean or the adviser of the last university attended: 1 original & 2 copies (Sample Format: any form/style of letter is to be accepted)

    (7) Medical certificate on the prescribed form: 1 original & 2 copies
    Required only for those who pass the exams and interview

    (8) Abstracts of theses: 1 original & 2 copies
    Abstract of the graduation thesis and any presented papers, if applicable (see Note. 8, P6 at the guideline)

    (9) Certificate of language proficiency (if applicable: e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, JLPT etc.): 2 copies only

    (10) Recommendation from the present employer (if currently employed): 1 original & 2 copies (Sample Format: any form/style of letter is to be accepted))

    (11) Photograph showing applicant's own works of art or a recorded tape of musical performance (only for those majoring in fine arts or music): 1 original & 2 copies

    2. Undergraduate Students

  • Applicant must be born between 2nd April 1994 and 1st April 2002.
  • The scholarship will be provided for 5 years (from April 2019 to March 2024) including the one-year preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects due to be provided upon arrival in Japan. For students majoring in Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Medicine or a six-year course in Pharmacy, the scholarship period will 7 years until March 2026.
  • All classes will be given in the Japanese language (except where a grantee is directly placed at a university which requires no Japanese language ability: for the details, please check 4. Direct Placement at the guideline below).
  • Applicant must have completed a 12-year regular course of school education or will complete a 12-year school by the end of March 2019.
  • Those who pass the document screening will take written exams based on the curriculum in Japan, in addition to interviews: Japanese, English and Math + Science major applicants will also take 2 science exams upon their chosen field of study.

    Required documents for Undergraduate Students (These documents must be written in Japanese or English)

    (1) Application Form a photo (4.5 by 3.5 cm): 1 original and 1 copy

    (2) Direct Placement Preference Form (Required for applicants for direct placement, after the exams) : 1 original
    The list of universities will be provided after the written exams and interview upon request.

    (3) Academic transcripts for all school years of last school attended: 1 original & 1 copy
    As we will not return the original, we highly recommend to submit an official copy authenticated/stamped by the Ministry of Education, as the original, instead.

    (4) Graduation certificate of the last school attended (or an attested document certifying that the applicant will graduate from the school): 1 original & 1 copy
    Same as the transcript, the authenticated/stamped copy should be submitted as the original.

    (5) Recommendation from the principal or teacher of the last school attended: 1 original & 1 copy (Sample Format)

    (6) Medical certificate on the prescribed form: 1 original & 1 copies
    Required only for those who pass the exams and interview

    (7) Certificate of enrollment (for applicants currently enrolled in a university): 1 original & 1 copy

    (8) Certificate of university enrollment qualification examination (if applicable; for those who did not graduate from high school): 1 original & 1 copy

    (9) Certificate of language proficiency (if applicable: e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, JLPT etc.): 2 copies

    3. Specialized Training College Students *What's "Special Training College"?

  • Applicant must be born between 2nd April 1994 and 1st April 2002.
  • The scholarship will be provided for 3 years (from April 2019 to March 2022) including the one-year preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects due to be provided upon arrival in Japan.
  • Applicant must have completed a 12-year school curriculum or graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan. (Applicants who will meet the above qualifications by March 2019 are eligible.)
  • Those who pass the document screening will take written exams based on the curriculum in Japan, in addition to interviews: Japanese, English and Math

    Required documents for Specialized Training College Students (These documents must be written in Japanese or English)

    (1) Application Form with a photo(4.5 by 3.5 cm) : 1 original and 1 copy

    (3) Graduation certificate of the last school attended (or certificate of expected graduation for an applicant due to graduate): 1 original & 1 copy
    Same as the transcript, the authenticated/stamped copy should be submitted as the original. 

    (4) Recommendation from the principal or teacher of the last school attended: 1 original & 1 copy (Sample format)

    (5) Medical certificate on the prescribed form: 1 original & 1 copies
    Required only for those who pass the exams and interview

    (6) Certificate of enrollment (for applicants currently enrolled in a university): 1 original & 1 copy

    (7) Certificate of university enrollment qualification examination (if applicable; for those who did not graduate from high school): 1 original & 1 copy

    【Frequent Asked Questions】

    Do I have to submit my photos with the application?
    - Yes, under any circumistances, submission of your photos is necessary. You may wear hijab, shemagh or ghutra.

     

    Do I have to take Japanese exam? I have never studied Japanese before.
    - It is mandatory for you to take both Japanese and English exam. You will not be rejected because of your lack of Japanese language ability. We will take only the better score (Japanese or English) for screening criteria. We will not adopt avarage score between these two exams.

     

    For undergraduate student scholarship, it is mandetory to submit recommendation from the principal or the adviser of the last school attended. My principal cannot speak English. Can the recommendation letter be in Arabic?
    - Yes, it can be but English is preferable.

     

    I would like to bring my family member to Japan. Is it possible?
    - Please note that under the MEXT scholarship program, the allowance and plane ticket fare will be covered only for the student who passed the exam and the screening. If you wish to bring your family to Japan, Japanese government will not pay for his/her visa, allowance or plane ticket fare. Visa processing time and necessary documents may vary depending on how you are related to the family member who wishes to go to Japan with you.

     

    I live in Jeddah. Can I take the examination and interview at Consulate-General of Japan in Jeddah?
    - No, the exams and interview for Saudi nationals will be held only at Embassy of Japan in Riyadh with no exception. Application forms also have to be sent to Embassy of Japan in Riyadh.

     

    I have an important appointment on the exam day. Can you reschedule the date?
    - No, we cannot make any exception to be fair for every applicant.
