National Day Reception

On 17th December 2012, a reception to celebrate the 79th birthday of His Majesty Emperor of Japan was held at Ambassador’s residence. Ambassador of Japan to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, HE Mr.Jiro Kodera, who recently assumed the post, expressed his determination to further enhance Japan-Saudi relations.


Inauguration Ceremony of Isuzu Manufactory

On Wednesday 12th December, 2012, Mr. Yasunari Morino, Charge d’Affaires ad Interim of Japan gave the congratulatory address at the Inauguration Ceremony of Isuzu Manufactory in Damman 2nd Industrial City.

At the beginning of the Ceremony, the first Isuzu truck ‘Made in KSA’ appeared in front of the guests at 12:12:12. HE. Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, Minister of Commerce and Industry drove the first truck and stated that “This is a precious moment for all of us and it marks the beginning of a new era in the history of the Kingdom’s industrialization. And the Minister thanked Isuzu for choosing Saudi Arabia as their manufacturing base and the other stakeholders for their strenuous efforts.

Saleh Al-Rasheed, Acting Director-General of MODON, Mr. Susumu Hosoi, President of ISUZU, Mr. Shigeru Endo, Former Ambassador of Japan to KSA, Mr. Satoshi Miyamoto, Deputy Director General, Manufacturing Industries Bureau, Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry, Mr. Seiji Hirota, Secretary General, Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East (JCCME) and other business people concerned as well as Mr. Yasunari Morino, Minister of Embassy of Japan in KSA attended the Ceremony.

Task Force for Japan-Saudi Industrial Cooperation (JCCME as secretariat) and Embassy of Japan in KSA facilitated the establishment of the Factory as an effort to promote Japanese investments to Saudi Arabia. 


Japanese robots attracted Saudi people

During 11-13 December 2012, Japanese robot creator Prof.Tomotaka TAKAHASHI visited Riyadh. He delivered lectures at Prince Sultan University and King Saud University. His robots ROPID and EVOLTA were presented to the large audience. A number of questions were asked by the attendees, such as how he created robots all alone. Prof.Takahashi and his robots won Guinness World records and many other international robotic championships.


Lecture about Japanese way of management

During 8-10 December 2012, Prof.Mariko MIKAMI, Associate Professor of University of Shinshu Graduate School of Business Administration, paid a visit to Saudi Arabia. On this occasion, she conducted lecture at Imam University and Prince Sultan University on the Japanese corporate culture. Her speech contained how local small and medium sized companies recovered after the earthquake disaster in March 2011.


Japan-Saudi Arabia Youth Exchange Program

During 21st – 30th November 2012, Youth Delegation from Saudi Arabia, consisting of 10 members, visited Japan. The Custodian of the Two Holly Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, then Crown Prince, made an official visit to Japan in 1998, and both countries agreed to launch Youth Exchange Program in order to promote bilateral ties. According to the agreement, both parties have annually sent delegations of approx. 10 youth members under the program named Japan-Saudi Arabia Youth Exchange Program.
This year, Saudi delegation visited Tokyo, and also Minamisanriku-town in Miyagi prefecture, northern part of Japan. Minamisanriku-town is located at the area affected by unprecedentedly large “Tsunami” during the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in March 2011. Since then, citizens of Minamisanriku-town have made utmost efforts toward reconstruction. A delegation from the town visited Saudi Arabia in May 2012, and participated in the Photo exhibition of the Great East Japan Earthquake at King Abdulaziz Foundation in Riyadh. Saudi Youth Delegation visited this town and saw the town’s efforts for the recovery from Tsunami, then met the people those who have been to Riyadh in May and had exchanges of views on disaster control and recovery effort.

22nd Annual Saudi-Japan Symposium for Catalysts in Petroleum Refining & Petrochemicals co-sponsored by KFUPM, JCCP, and JPI

On 25th of November, 2012, Charge d’Affaires Yasunari Morino gave the opening address at the “22nd Annual Saudi-Japan Symposium for Catalysts in Petroleum Refining & Petrochemicals” co-sponsored by KFUPM (King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals), JCCP (Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum), and JPI (Japan Petroleum Institute).

In the symposium, researchers of KFUPM, KACST (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology), Saudi Aramco, Japanese universities and oil companies with the Head of delegation, Dr. Takao Masuda, Professor of Hokkaido University, as well as those from Cambridge University and Manchester University in the United Kingdom presented the outcome of their research and shared technological information.

At his opening remarks, HE Dr. Khaled Al Sultan, Rector of KFUPM, expressed his delight and gratitude for holding the 22nd symposium with the support by JCCP and JPI, celebrating the golden jubilee of KFUPM. 

The relationship between Japan and the Kingdom are steadily progressing in the field of science and technology. We expect that the cooperation between Japan and the kingdom will extend more with the support of the embassy.


Completion of the mission in Saudi Arabia of H.E. the Ambassador Mr. Shigeru Endo

On 9th October, 2012, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, the Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, completed his mission in Saudi Arabia and left the Kingdom for Japan. Prior to leaving, Mr. Endo made courtesy visits H.R.H. Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, other Royal Princes and high ranking officials and expressed his appreciation for support extended by Saudi Arabia in order to enhance relationship between Japan and Saudi Arabia.

Visit of Japanese minesweepers to Dammam

During 3-6 October 2012, Minesweeping Tender “Uraga” and Minesweeping Ocean “Hachijyo” of Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force made a good will call on King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam.  The minesweepers were led by Captain Yasuhiro Kawakami, Commander of Minesweeper Division 51. They made the good will visit to Saudi Arabia after participating in an international excersize activity. Captain Kawakami organized, together with HE Ambassador Mr.Shigeru Endo, reception on board became acquainted with Japanese residents in Eastern Province and Saudi navies. The Japanese members of the ships also enjoyed a friendly football match with their Saudi counterparts in an intimate atmosphere.


Commemorative Ceremony to confer a Certificate of Commendation on Mr. Ahmad Al-Shugairi

On 30th September 2012, HE Mr. Shigeru ENDO, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, conferred a Certificate of Commendation on Mr. Ahmad Al-Shugairi, Producer of MBC TV Program “Khawater”, in honor of his tremendous cooperation to the development of the relationship between Japan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

His TV program “Khawater” broadcasted during Ramadan in 2009, brought to Saudi house holds the images of Japanese culture and life styles and stressed the importance of disciplines and hardworking in social life. Since the TV program was broadcasted, the interest among Saudi citizens in Japan has grown and the number of Saudi tourists to Japan has increased significantly.

Embassy organized 5th Japanese Speech Contest

On 27th September 2012, the Embassy of Japan, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Information, held the 5th Japanese Language Speech Contest in Saudi Arabia at King Fahad Culture Center in Riyadh. 12 participants from all over Saudi Arabia conducted their speeches in Japanese. The theme of the speech was required to be either "Japan and I" or "My family". The participants discussed such subjects as why they came to be interested in Japan, their experience during their study in Japan, and precious memories spent together with grandparents during their childhood etc.


Japan Day 4

During 11-12 September 2012, the Embassy of Japan organized cultural event ‘Japan Day 4’. During the event, Dr. Karam Khalil, Dean of the department of Japanese Language and Literature, Cairo University gave a lecture introducing the history and transformation of Japanese literature. In demonstrations of Ikebana(Japanese flower arrangement), Mr. Tenkei Nomura, a Japanese artist who is making demonstration all over the world, used flowers and branches from local market and wadi, and presented very beautiful works. In addition, there was a Japanese film screening in the event. The film entitled ‘Éclair’ draws a life of orphaned in Japan after the World War II. These programs attracted the visitors.


HE Ambassador Endo’s Visit to Tabuk Province

H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, visited Tabuk Province on September 9th, 2012. During his visit, Ambassador Endo paid a courtesy call on HRH Prince Fahad bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Governor of Tabuk Province to exchange views on how to further strengthen cooperation between the Province and Japan.

Visit of H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan, to Sendai City, Minamisanriku Town and Toyone Village

On 31st July-1st August 2012, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, visited Miyagi Prefectural Governmant Office, Sendai City, and Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Ambassador Endo referred to Saudi Arabia’s support to the affected areas by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Ambassador Endo was asked to convey their appreciation for the support to the Saudi side. The Miyagi people also expressed their expectation for warm continued support by Saudi Arabia for long process of reconstruction and recovery. 

At Minamisanriku Town, Ambassador Endo was reunited with members of the delegation from Minamisanriku Town who visited Saudi Arabia in May 2012 with support from Al Walid bin Talal Foundation Global. The delegation members expressed again their deep gratitude for the support to their visit to Saudi Arabia, and strong desire for exchanges at a grass-root level with Saudi Arabia. Also, Mr. Jin Sato, Mayor of Minamisanriku Town, expressed his expectation for further exchanges.

On 6-7th August 2012, Ambassador Endo visited Toyone Village, Kitashitara District, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It was the second time for Ambassador Endo to visit Toyone Village, following his visit in December 2011. During his stay in Toyone Village, Ambassador Endo made a courtesy call on Mr. Minoru Ito, Mayor of Toyone Village, exchanged views on Japan-Saudi relationship with Toyone Saudi Arabia Friendship Steering Committee, and gave a speech at Toyone Elementary and Junior High-School. In addition to that, Ambassador Endo delivered a certificate of commendation to Mr. Ito to recognize Toyone Village’s enormous contribution to development of exchanges at a grass-root level with Saudi Arabia.

The Embassy of Japan would like to support cultural exchanges at a grass-root level between Sendai City, Minamisanriku Town, Toyone Village and Saudi Arabia.

Visit of Japanese Training Squadron to Jeddah

During the period of 17-20th July 2012, Japanese Training Squadron visited Jeddah Islamic Port. Some 200 trainees from Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force were part of the crew. The squadron is expected to pay visit to 14 ports in the world, including Saudi Arabia. The aim of the Squadron trip is to improve the necessary skills as prominent naval officers and to promote friendly relations with countries which they visit.

HE Ambassador Mr.Shigeru Endo, together with Rear Admiral Hidetoshi Fuchinoue, commander of the Squadron and Mr.Jun Yoshida, Consul General of Japan to Jeddah, paid courtesy calls to HRH Mishaal bin Majed al Saud, Governor of Jeddah,H Rear Admiral Khalid Al Hamdan, Commander of Western Fleet, HE Captain Saher bin Mousa al Tablawi, Director of Jeddah Port Administration Office, HE Major General Zaar Al Balawi, Commander of the Western Military District, and HE Major General Bader al Jabiri, Commander of the Mekkah District for Border Guard. The delegation discussed the bilateral relationship with Saudi partners.

The commissioned officers enjoyed the friendly football match with Saudi Navy ream. At the reception on board, they deepened the knowledge about Saudi Arabia through conversations with Saudi naval officers and Japanese residents in KSA.

Visit of H.I.H. the Crown Prince and H.E. Mr. Satsuki Eda, Japanese Ambassador on Special Mission (Former President of the House of Councilors) to offer condolences on the demise of H.R.H. Crown Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud

During On the demise of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior on June 16, 2012, His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince of Japan and H.E.. Mr. Satsuki Eda, Former President of the House of Councilors, as Ambassador on Special Mission, visited Saudi Arabia on June 20 to offer their condolences.
His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince, at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah, extended his condolence as well as that of His Majesty the Emperor to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, the newly appointed Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman expressed his gratitude in Japanese, saying “Arigato (i.e., thank you).” Both of them had a heart-warming conversation, touching upon the visit to Saudi Arabia by Their Imperial Highnesses the Crown Prince and Crown Princess in 1994, and the visit of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman to Japan in 1998. Also, H.E. Mr. Eda, Ambassador on Special Mission expressed condolences to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman on behalf of the Government and the people of Japan.
This condolence visit has reaffirmed the exiting strong bonds between the Imperial and Royal Families of Japan and Saudi Arabia, and the significance of bilateral relationship, and made great contributions to the further development of the bilateral relations.

HE Ambassodor ENDO's attendance at the Graduation Ceremony at Naif Arab University for Security Science

H.E. Mr. Shigeru ENDO, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, delivered a speech on the occasion of the Graduation Ceremony at Naif Arab University for Security Sciences on June 2nd, 2012, patronized by H.R.H. Prince Ahmad bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Minister for Interior.


HE Ambassador Endo's visit to Al-Baha Province

H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, visited Al-Baha Province on May 28th, 2012. During his visit, Ambassador Endo paid a courtesy call on HRH Prince Mishari bin Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of Al-Baha Province to exchange views on how to further strengthen cooperation between the Province and Embassy.
On the same day, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo also visited several natural park projects in Al-Baha Province.

Photo Exhibition of the Great East Japan Earthquake Held

From May 16 to 25, a photo exhibition of the Great East Japan Earthquake was held at King Abdulaziz Foundation Memorial Hall, Riyadh co-hosted by the Embassy of Japan and King Abdulaziz Foundation. In the opening ceremony, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, H.R.H. Prince Naif bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Dr. Fahd bin Abdullah Al-Semmari, Secretary General of King Abdulaziz Foundation and a delegation from “Minamisanrikucho” town in Miyagi Prefecture (one of the affected area in Japan by the disaster) attended. During the ten-day event, about 3,500 people, mostly Saudi citizens visited this exhibition and examined pictures in which Japan’s recovery and Saudi Arabia’s support for the affected areas were shown.


Inauguration Ceremony of Tanajib Factory of J-Power Systems Saudi Co., Ltd

The inauguration ceremony of Tanajib Factory of J-Power Systems Saudi Co., Ltd was held on 22 May and followed by a reception. J-Power Systems Saudi Co., Ltd was established through joint investments by J-Power Systems and Marubeni Metals Corporation. Tanajib Factory will manufacture underwater power cables, create employment for Saudi Arabian people and serve technology transfer. The Task Force for Japan-Saudi Industrial Cooperation (Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East as secretariat) and Embassy of Japan in KSA facilitated the establishment of the Factory as an effort to promote Japanese investments to Saudi Arabia.

Cup of Japanese Ambassador of Karate

On 3rd May, “the Cup of Japanese Ambassador” of Karate was jointly organized by the Embassy of Japan in Saudi Arabia and the Karate Federation in Saudi Arabia. A trophy and medals were awarded to the winners by H.E.Mr.Shigeru Endo,Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With the attendance of Mr. Ibrahim Abdulrahman, Vice President of of Saudi Arabian Karate Federation, Mr. Humud bin Saud, Secretary General of Saudi Arabian Karate Federation and many Saudi people, this championship contributed to promoting the sports exchanges between Japan and Saudi Arabia.


The Embassy of Japan participated in the 3rd International Exhibition & Conference on Higher Education

The Embassy of Japan participated in the 3rd International Exhibition & Conference on Higher Education organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Saudi Arabia, during April 17th to 20th, 2012 in Riyadh.  23 universities, schools and institutions participated in this event from Japan. The embassy introduced Japanese scholarships offered by JASSO or Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology of Japan, and GLOBAL 30, and showed activities of JICA and JICE.
During the event, Imam University held a workshop under the theme of prospects of further cooperation between Japanese and Saudi universities. H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, the ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia and Japanese professors of universities professors participated in it.
After the workshop, H.E. Mr. Endo called on Dr. Abu al-Hail, president of Imam University, and discussed Japan-Saudi relationship in the field of research and education.


Japan-Saudi Arabia Youth Exchange Program

During 31st March – 9th April 2012, Youth Delegation from Japan, consisted of 9 members, visited KSA. The program has its origin since the official visit to Japan by the Custodian of the Two Holly Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, then Crown Prince, in 1998, when both countries agreed to launch Youth Exchange Program in order to promote bilateral ties. According to the agreement, since then, both parties have sent delegations with approx. 10 youth members each year under the program named Japan-Saudi Arabia Youth Exchange Program.
The delegation visited 4 cities in Saudi Arabia such as Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddha, and Unaizah. They had a chance to exchange views and deepen knowledge about Saudi Arabia, through the talks with representatives of schools and General Presidency of Youth and Welfare etc.
On 4th April, a welcome reception was held in the residence of the Ambassador of Japan to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and representatives of General Presidency of Youth and Welfare, Saudi Judo Federation and Sakura Mamlka, group of admirer of Japan, participated there.
The members of this year’s Youth Delegation were members of Japanese private companies and local authorities such as Toyone Village in Aichi Prefecture(*Please see also "Visit of H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan, to Toyone Village"), which has been continuing exchange program with Saudi Arabia in local levels.

HE Ambassador Endo’s visit to Northern Borders Province

H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, visited Northern Borders Province on April 8th, 2012. During his visit, Ambassador Endo paid a courtesy call on HH Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Mesaed Al-Saud, Governor of Northern Borders Province to exchange views on how to further strengthen cooperation between the Province and Embassy.
On the same day, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo also exchanged ideas on future cooperative relationship with ARAR Chamber of Commerce and Industry and business people in Northern Borders Province.

Visit to al-Khafji of Mr. Morino, Minister of the Embassy

Mr. Yasunari Morino called upon Al-Khafji Joint Operations (KJO) on 2-3 April 2012 and had exhchanges with Japanese engineers who reside in al-Khafji and work for KJO. A warmest dinner was hosted by KJO on the evening of 2 April which Mr. Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Sufayyan, Mayor of Al-Khafji, Mr. Abdullah N. Al-Helal, President and CEO of Aramco Gulf Operations, representatives of Al Khafji governmental offices and KJO management. Mayor Al-Sufayyan expressed his hope to maintain the close friendship with the Embassy of Japan.
Mr. Morino met KJO management, including Mr. Jamal A. Jaafar, Chairman of KJO, on 3 April.

All people concerned shared the view that Al-Khafji where Arabian Oil Company commenced the development of the oil field in 1959 is testimony to the close tie between Japan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and has contributed to the economic growth of Japan and development of the Kingdom since then.

On 25th March, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia attended a ceremony held at Unicharm Gulf Hygienic Industries Ltd and addressed congratulatory message to their staffs for receiving "The 4th Monozukuri Nippon Grand Award -METI Minister's Award-". In the message, Ambassador Endo mentioned that Unicharm Gulf Hygienic Industries Ltd is the only company outside Japan which has received this award among 14 winners, and also there are 3 reasons why Unicharm Gulf Hygienic Industries Ltd was selected : (1) products are very well adapted to meet the needs in the Saudi market, (2) the company maintains a clear policy and vision for the expansion of manufacturing activities to cover the MENA region, and (3) the company has demonstrated excellent management of staff who come from 19 countries, with different cultures and language, and produced high quality products. After the ceremony, Ambassador had a tour inside the factory.

And the Embassy would like to further encourage and support more Japanese companies entry and activity in Saudi Arabia referring to Unicharm's achievement as a best practice.

Ambassador Endo's visit to Qassim Province

H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, visited Qassim Province on March 19th, 2012. During his visit, Ambassador Endo paid a courtesy call on HRH Prince Faisal bin Bander bin Abudul Aziz Al-Saud, Governor of Qassim Province. to explain the fruitful results of the cooperation relationship between both countries in recently including Japan-Saudi Business Opportunity Forum” held in Tokyo on February 1st & 2nd  , and to exchange views how to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.  At the meeting, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo introduced “Water Study Project in Buraydah & Unaizah” implemented by “Yokohama consortium” (Yokohama Waterworks Bureau, Yokohama Water and JGC) under the Memorandum of Cooperation between Japan and Saudi Arabia concerning cooperation on water and wastewater management signed last September. H.R.H. Prince Faisal bin Bander expressed expectations this project will became a success story of developing bilateral relationship.

On the same day, H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo also exchanged views of our cooperation with Al Qassim Chamber of Commerce and Industry and General Directorate of Water in Qassim Region, Ministry of Water & Electricity.

The 11th Japan's Cup

On March 9th 2012, the 11th Japan's Cup hosted by the Equestrian Club of Riyadh was took place. Mr. Zenichiro Kobayashi (Director of Japan Racing Association) was invited to the Race as the cooperator, along with the Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo. The Japan's Cup is one of the main events between Japan and Saudi Arabia since 1999, hosted by the Equestrian Club of Riyadh, in cooperated with the Japan Racing Association. At this time, H.R.H. Prince Muteb bin Abdullah, Minister of State, Member of the Council of Ministers and Chief of National Guard, and also many Saudi citizens and Japanese residents in Saudi Arabia came to see the race. At the award ceremony after the race, with the attendance of the Ambassador and Mr. Zunaydi, Secretariat General of Equstrian Club of Riyadh, a trophy was awarded to the winner by Director Kobayashi.


‘Grassroots/Japanese culture promoting program’ by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan carried out a program called ‘Grassroots/Japanese culture promoting program’, in 6 countries including Saudi Arabia, aiming to increase interests in Japan among ordinary people and to create young generation which will be friends of Japan in future.
From December 2011, Ms.Yumi Kobayashi, Japanese language teacher was dispatched in the Kingdom for three months through this program. Also Ms.Riho Miyamoto, Headmistress of Koryu Toyokai Suibokuka Temae School of Ikebana (flower arrangement) has stayed for one month since February 2012.

Ms.Yumi Kobayashi has carried out Japanese language and culture courses in Dar Al Hekma College, and Effat University in Jeddah and Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University and Prince Sultan University in Riyadh. The Embassy decided to invite the teacher to Saudi Arabia in order to meet the strong demand to study Japanese of young generation of Saudi Arabia. Ms.Kobayashi also introduced diversity of Japanese culture in events organized by the Embassy, such as origami, monkiri asobi, and tea ceremony etc.

2. Activities of Ms.Riho Miyamoto, headmistress of Koryu Toyokai Suibokuka Temae school of Ikebana (flower arrangement)
Ms.Riho Miyamoto made Japanese flower arrangement course at Prince Sultan University, Riyadh. Ikebana is traditional culture of Japan and requires some special materials that are not readily available in Saudi Arabia. In spite of this, in order to introduce Ikebana, Ms.Miyamoto used flower vases, natural woods and flowers which can be acquired locally. Beside the courses at the University, Ms.Miyamoto made demonstrations about Ikebana at events organized by the Embassy.

The Embassy of Japan Participates in the Riyadh International Book Fair

The Embassy of Japan participated in the 30th Riyadh International Book Fair hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Information, Saudi Arabia, during the period from March 6th to 16th, 2012 in Riyadh.  This event received more than 2 million visitors for 11 days, in which more than 407 governmental organizations and private book sellers from 25 countries including Japan and Saudi Arabia participated. 
The Embassy of Japan displayed nearly 300 books on Japan written in Japanese, English and Arabic at the Japan booth while presenting Origami and Calligraphy demonstrations in cooperation with Ms.Yumi Kobayashi, Japanese language instructor, and Ms. Riho Miyamoto, Headmistress of Koryu Toyokai Suibokuka Hanatemae Ikebana School. The number of visitors to the Japanese booth reached more than 4,000 people for the 11 days.


H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia, participated in “2nd Saudi Downstream Forum and Exhibition 2012”

H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan in Saudi Arabia, participated in “2nd Saudi Downstream Forum and Exhibition 2012” hosted by Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, located in Jubail city in the Eastern Province on 6th, March, 2012.

In the presence of H.E. Eng. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and His Highness Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Thunayan Al-Saud, Chairman of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu a number of international petrochemical experts from overseas as well as Japan and the Kingdom shared current situations and future trends in the field of petrochemical industries.

H.E. Mr. Shigeru Endo also actively exchanged views with key persons of petrochemical sector in the Kingdom such as Dr. Mosleh Hamed Al Otabi, CEO of Royal Commission in Jubai, Mr. Ziad S. Al-Labban, CEO of Petro Rabigh.

Japan Day 3

On 2-3 March 2012, the Embassy of Japan organized cultural event ‘Japan Day 3’at King Fahad Culture Center in Riyadh.
Various workshops and demonstrations about Japanese traditional culture were organized in the event; such as Ikebana (Flower arrangement), Furoshiki (Textile wrapping), Monkiri Asobi (Paper cutting craft), Origami (Paper folding craft) and Nihon Buyo(Classical dance), as well as seminar about Japanese language. The event received approximately 1000 visitors. During the event, Japanese film ‘Happy Flight’and photo exhibition about recovery of Japan after the Great East Earthquake attracted visitors who are interested in Japanese contemporary life.
The Embassy of Japan is willing to organize more and more cultural events which will comprehensively introduce tradition and modern life in Japan.

Visit of Ms. Mako HATTORI, specialist in Japanese traditional cloth Kimono

During 29th February-2nd March 2012, Ms. Mako HATTORI, expert in Japanese traditional cloth visited Saudi Arabia, by the initiative of Japan Foundation. Ms. Hattori made 3 times lecture/demonstration about Kimono. Wide range of Saudi people, including fans of Japanese culture, participated the program and learnt about Kimono history, meanings of the patterns etc. They enjoyed watching how to wear a Kimono as well as Japanese traditional dance performed by Ms. Hattori.
While Ms. Hattori showed how to wear a Kimono, the participants were amazed to find out that a Kimono consists of many layers and parts.


Japanese cultural event at Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University

On 28th February 2012, Japanese cultural event took place at Princess Noura University. The program included demonstration about Ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement, and Nihon Buyo, traditional dance, performed by Ms.Riho Miyamoto, Headmistress of Koryu Toyokai Suibokuka Hanatemae Ikebana School, as well as Japanese language introductive lecture by Ms.Yumi Kobayashi, Japanese language instructor, and wives of Embassy stuffs showed how to wear Kimono, traditional cloth. In the opening speech, both Mr.Shigeru Endo, Ambassador of Japan, and Dr.Asma Abu Malik, Dean of College of Languages and Translation, mentioned that the Embassy and PNU will cooperate for the launching of Japanese language section.
The Embassy of Japan aims to present Japanese culture continuously for the young generations in Saudi Arabia.


H.E. Mr. Hidehisa Otsuji, Vice President of the House of Councilors of Japan, participated in The 3rd G20 Speakers’ Consultation Meeting

The 3rd G20 Speakers’ Consultation Meeting was held in Riyadh during the period of February 24 – 26, 2012, organized by the Saudi Shora Council headed by its  Speker HE Dr Abdullah Al-Sheikh. HE Mr Hidehisa Otsuji, Vice President of the House of Councilors of Japan, participated in this meeting. During the meeting, HE Mr Otsuji sat together with HE Dr Abdullah Al-Sheikh for cordial talk.


International Workshop hosted by KACST and JCCP

On the 9th of January, 2012, H.E. Ambassador Shigeru Endo gave the opening address at "the 1st Joint International Workshop for the Earth's Surface and –Subsurface 4 Dimension-Monitoring in 2012" hosted by KACST (King Abdullah City for Science and Technology) and JCCP (Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum). In the presence of H.E. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Suwaiyel, KACST President and H.H. Prince Dr. Turki Bin Saud Bin Mohammad Al Saud, KACST Vice President, a number of international industry-university experts from Australia, the United States, China, Russia, Czech and other countries as well as Japan and the Kingdom shared knowledge and expertise in the field of 4D seismic monitoring and other related innovative technology through discussion of the workshop. JCCP is carrying out development and demonstration test under the technical cooperation project on "Application of Ground Deformation Monitoring Technologies towards Preserving the Natural Resources Infrastructure's Potential" during this fiscal year. In this workshop, participants from Japan introduced Japanese own 4D seismic monitoring technology, ACROSS (Accurately Controlled and Routinely Operated Signal System) and showed its practicality and excellence to other participants. Japan and the Kingdom are trying to strengthen the relationship in the field of technology development. We expect that ACROSS will make a significant contribution to the development of Saudi petroleum industry.


H.E. Mr. Koichiro GEMBA, Minister of Foreign Affairs, visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

On 7th and 8th January 2012, the Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro GEMBA visited Saudi Arabia. This was the first visit by the Japanese Foreign Minister to Saudi Arabia in the last eleven years.. The objective of the visit is to enhance bilateral relations in the fields of petroleum, renewable energy, water, industry, youth and cultural exchanges etc., so that such a multi-layered relationship will assure energy security of Japan and bring further prosperity in both countries. During his stay in Saudi Arabia, Minister GEMBA held talks with Minister of Defence HRH Prince Salman, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs HPH Prince Abdulaziz and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources HE Naimi on bilateral relationship, issues on Middles East affairs and on international affairs of common interest. Minister GEMBA also signed on the Memorandum on Cooperation and Strategic Dealogue between Japan and GCC Member States between Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs HRH Prince Abdulaziz and Director of GCC HE Zayani.
